Nevada Power offering to upgrade coal-fired power plant

Coal-fired power plant northeast of Las Vegas could be in for renovation if Nevada Power Company gets approval.

The utility is responding to federal E-P-A air quality violation letters with a proposal to expand and upgrade the Reid Gardner station — about 50 miles Las Vegas.

A scoping meeting is set next week.

The plan would include getting permission to build new evaporation ponds and a fly ash storage yard on nearby federal land. Read more » »

Australian Market Ends With Noteworthy Gains On Firm Banking, Mining Stocks

Sydney shares closed Friday’s session significantly higher on the positive thrust provided by mining and banking sector stocks.

The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index gained 30.6 points or 0.58% to settle at 5,290.0, after hitting a high of 5,314.5 and a low of 5,274.9. The key index advanced 1.3% over the trading week.

The All Ordinaries Index rose 30.0 points or 0.57% to end at 5,253.9. About 1.35 billion shares worth A$4.53 billion were traded, with gainers outplaying losers by 669 to 441, while 339 issues remained steady. Read more » »

The Australian share market has improved after gains by the mining and energy sector.
The ASX 200 is up 31 points to 5,290, while the All Ordinaries Index has added 30 points to 5,254.

Grain companies have lost value as a result of the worsening drought.

    Uranium interest from energy crunch bodes well for Wyoming

    The global energy crunch has meant growing demand for Wyoming’s oil, gas and coal, but the state is also seeing a major resurgence of interest in its plentiful supply of uranium.

    Skyrocketing uranium prices over the past three years have sent companies scrambling to explore new claims, including several in Wyoming, which leads the nation in production.

    The industry is small when measured against coal or gas, so even a major uranium boom would seem modest by comparison. According to the Wyoming Mining Association, 2004 mineral royalties for uranium were around $1 million. Read more » »
