AD, $400m iron and steel plants

Al Nasser Industrial Enterprises has started building two iron and steel plants in the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi, Gulf News reported. Worth $109m, the plants are expected to come online by April 2008. One will be a sponge iron plant with a capacity of 250,000 tons per year; the other will manufacture steel billets with a capacity of 350,000 tpy.

Teenager impaled on iron railings

OLD man died after becoming impaled on iron railings during a night out in High Wycombe town centre.

Steven Whale, of Copyground Lane, High Wycombe, was cut from the railings in All Saints churchyard shortly after 1.30am on Saturday.

It is believed he had slipped while trying to climb over the fence and was impaled on the side of his right leg.

Toward New Medications For Iron-Overload Diseases

Scientists report progress in developing much-needed new medications for hemochromatosis and other iron-overload diseases. In these conditions, excess amounts of iron accumulate in the liver, heart, pancreas and other organs and eventually cause serious damage.

Raymond J. Bergeron and colleagues at the University of Florida explain that existing treatments remove only small amounts of iron from sensitive organs like the heart. Treatment sometimes must continue for years to remove enough iron to prevent organ damage, they note in a report in the ACS Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, a biweekly publication. Read more » »

Security of Congo’s Uranium Worrying - Diplomats

Countries suspected of seeking nuclear arms may have exploited lax security in the Democratic Republic of Congo to get their hands on uranium from the giant central African state, diplomatic and intelligence sources say.

China plans to keep small foreign companies out of its gold sector

China, the world fourth-largest gold producer, plans new policies on foreign investment in its gold mining industry, allowing in only the largest overseas players.

“The new policy is designed to improve the quality of foreign investment to ensure sustainable development of the sector,” an unnamed source told the China Daily.

The newspaper did not give details about the policy, saying only that an announcement would be made before the end of the year. Read more » »

U.S. Dollar Down, Gold Higher in European Morning Trading

The U.S. dollar fell against other major currencies in European trading Thursday morning, dropping to its lowest level in 14 years against the British pound. Gold rose.

The euro was quoted at $1.3190, up from $1.3156 late Wednesday. The British pound was quoted at $1.9558, up from $1.9462.

  • 1.2071 Swiss francs, down from 1.2090
