Wildlife Federation links energy bill to Florida drilling
January 13th, 2007
One way to reduce pressure to drill for oil and natural gas off Florida’s Gulf of Mexico shoreline — impose a conservation fee.
A National Wildlife Federation spokesman said today that congressional legislation would have that effect if fuel prices remain high.
Jerry Karnas said his organization is launching a radio advertising campaign across the state to urge Florida’s congressional delegation to back the bill. The legislation is expected to come up for a vote in the House of Representatives next Thursday.
Karnas say the conservation fee would pay for research and development of alternative energy sources, which in turn would reduce the demand for oil and natural gas.
