Largest miners’ union in Peru begins strike

Peru’s largest miners’ union launched an indefinite strike Monday, but workers at several of the country’s largest pits were working as usual.

The National Federation of Metallurgic and Steel Miners called the strike to demand better job benefits and an end to outsourcing among mining companies.

Tribute Contracts Environmental and Geotechnical Studies

Tribute Minerals Inc. is pleased to announce it has hired Golder Associates Ltd., a global consulting firm specializing in environmental science and ground engineering, out of their Sudbury office in Ontario. They have been hired to conduct baseline environmental and geotechnical assessments on the Garnet Lake Property in order to fulfil government permitting requirements for driving a ramp on the property, and gathering an underground bulk sample from the Arrow Zone. Golder personnel are scheduled to commence field studies on the property in May.

Pacifica Resources Announces 2007 Selwyn Drilling Commences in Don Valley

Pacifica Resources Ltd. is pleased to announce that the diamond drilling program has commenced on the Selwyn Project. Two diamond drills contracted for exploration drilling on the Selwyn Project are now coring in the Don Valley with a third diamond drill starting up later this week. All remaining diamond drills will commence drilling over the next five to six weeks. The program consists of a minimum 40,000 metres of diamond drilling that will be mostly in-fill drilling but will also include the testing of some high-priority regional stratigraphic targets outside of the defined deposits and zones. The exploration drilling is a major component of a minimum $25 million budget that also includes continuing engineering and environmental studies.

Teal seeks gold in Namibia

Mining exploration company Teal says it has started a pre-feasibility study for a new gold mining operation at its wholly-owned Otjikoto Gold Project in Namibia.

Rick Menell, Teal’s president and CEO said: “Teal has completed an assessment study related to the viability of a mining operation at Otjikoto, which has a current resource of 1.3 million ounces of gold. The positive conclusion of this study has motivated us to start immediately with a pre-feasibility study of the mineral resource.”

Newcrest Gold Output Rises 6% on Cadia, Cracow Mines (Update4)

Newcrest Mining Ltd., Australia’s largest gold mining company, said third-quarter gold output rose six percent amid increasing production of the precious metal at its Cadia Hill and Cracow mines.

Gold production was 390,096 ounces in the three months ended March 31, Melbourne-based Newcrest said today in a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange. That compares with 367,790 ounces a year earlier.

Chalco triples in Shanghai listing, rivals Alcoa

Shares in Chinese alumina producer Aluminum Corp of China (Chalco) nearly tripled in their Shanghai debut, valuing it on a par with world leader Alcoa Inc.

The first-day gain also left Chalco`s Shanghai-listed A shares at a 102% premium to its Hong Kong-listed H shares, underlining concern that a bubble might be building in Chinese stocks as investors keep pouring in new money.

Rio`s Indonesian nickel project needs forestry permit

Rio Tinto Group, the world`s third-largest mining company, said a planned US$2 billion nickel project in Indonedia may not proceed without the company getting an extended forestry permit.

The company wants a 30-year forestry permit along with its mining permit, or “there`s a chance this project will not go through,” said incoming chief executive officer Tom Albanese in an interview before meeting Indonesian vice-president Yusuf Kalla on Monday.

Alcan to build $7B Saudi aluminum smelter

Alcan Inc. (TSX: AL) said on Monday it will develop a $7 billion project to build, with Saudi Arabian mining company Ma’aden, what would be one of the largest integrated aluminum-making operations in the world.

Alcan, already the world’s second-largest maker of primary aluminum, would hold a 49-per cent stake in the project, which would comprise 1,400 megawatts of power generation, a 720,000-tonne aluminum smelter and 1.6 million-tonne alumina refinery.

Alcan and Ma’aden plan US$7 billion mine-to-metal joint venture in Saudi Arabia

Alcan Inc. (TSX:AL) and Saudi Arabian mining company Ma’aden have signed a “heads-of-agreement” deal to develop a US$7-billion aluminum “mine-to-metal” project in Saudi Arabia, including bauxite mining, alumina refining, power generation and aluminum smelting.

Montreal-based Alcan said Monday it will hold a 49 per cent stake in the project and provide technology and operating management support, with Ma’aden holding 51 per cent.

South Africa: DRDGold Will Refocus On Local Interests

GOLD producer DRDGold planned to refocus on the profitability of its South African mines, it said on Thursday, after reporting a sharp fall in production and profits both from its discontinued Australasian operations and its South African mines.

The group also plans to wring profits from reviving gold and uranium mining at some of its discontinued West Rand assets by putting them into a joint venture company, Kgosi Mining, with two partners. Read more » »
