Mustang Engineering and Wood Group awarded U.S. Patent for LNG Smart® Horizontal LNG Storage Tanks
June 30th, 2007Mustang Engineering and Wood Group, have been awarded U.S. patent 7,146,817 for their LNG Smart Horizontal Storage Tanks, full containment LNG storage tanks offering an alternative to conventional vertical LNG storage. The LNG Smart Tanks offer a modular design that can significantly reduce construction time, and the low horizontal profile reduces the visual impact of the facility for local residents. In addition, the tanks are suitable for onshore or offshore facilities.
The LNG Smart Horizontal LNG Storage Tanks include one or more thin-walled stainless steel or 9 percent nickel steel horizontal tanks inside a concrete or steel “cold box” with perlite and/or other insulating material. The tanks can be filled and emptied by a top-mounted LNG pump or filled at the top and emptied through the bottom with manifold piping and an external pump. The steel tanks can hold pressure that enhances operations and reduces boil-off gas compression requirements.
The LNG Smart Horizontal LNG Storage Tank system is a key component of the suite of LNG Smart technologies that also includes the LNG Smart Air Vaporization (SAV) process, small-scale LNG liquefaction processes with no mixed refrigerants, various floating vessels with regasification and storage technologies (FSRUs), and floating production storage and offloading vessels with onboard liquefaction (FPSOs).
