Two contractors working at East Kentucky Power Cooperative’s new clean-coal generating unit being built at H.L. Spurlock Station in Maysville were injured Friday morning.

According to Nick Comer with EKPC, the two men fell between 6 and 10 feet from scaffolding while at the site. They were both transported to Meadowview Regional Medical Center.

Comer said information from a witness indicated the injuries were non-life threatening.

The accident occurred around 11 a.m. at the unit, known as Spurlock 4. Responding to the scene was Maysville/Mason County EMS and Maysville Police Department.

According to information previously provided, new clean-coal burning technology will make the plant one of the two cleanest plants in Kentucky.

Between Spurlock 4 and the E.A. Gilbert Generating Unit, enough electricity will be generated to power homes in 30 cities the size of Maysville. The power will be shipped to EKPC’s 16-member electric cooperatives, which serve about 480,000 homes, farms, businesses and industries across 89 counties.

Estimated cost for the unit, which has a completion date of April, 2009, is $470 million. At one point during construction, an estimated 150 workers were on the site. More information is expected later today.
