The Mechel (RTS: MTLR) coal and steel group’s Yuzhny Kuzbass (RTS: UKUZ) coal company boosted net profit to Russian accounting standards 17% in the third quarter of 2007 compared
with the second quarter to 1.32 billion rubles, the company said in a statement.

Profit rose because the company reappraised its investments in shares held in other companies.
Yuzhny Kuzbass is one of the three biggest coal producers in Russia. It produced more than 17 million tonnes of coal in 2006.

Igor Zyuzin, Mechel’s general director, is the group’s main beneficiary, and around 25% shares are in free float.
