The power shortage, which the government has said will last until at least 2012, helped push platinum prices to a record $2,301.50 an ounce during the quarter while coal exported from South Africa’s Richards Bay also traded at an all-time high.
“Production in the first quarter, particularly of platinum group metals and coal, was adversely affected by power supply constraints in South Africa and adverse weather conditions in Australia and South Africa,” Anglo said.
Project Status
It is Anglo’s first quarterly production report, issued to comply with London Stock Exchange rules. The company also gave updates on the status of its projects.
Copper production rose 9.1 percent to 159,733 tons, buoyed by richer ores at the Los Bronces mine in Chile. Zinc output rose 1 percent to 82,877 tons. Nickel production fell 29 percent to 4,622 tons after a strike at Venezuela’s Loma de Niquel mine.
Iron-ore production jumped 7.2 percent to 8.19 million tons as Anglo expanded the Sishen mine in South Africa. Power cuts reduced ferromanganese production by 1.3 percent to 77,000 tons. Output of manganese ore jumped 15 percent to 666,000 tons.
Production of coking coal, used in steelmaking, rose 4.9 percent to 2.77 million tons. Supply of thermal coal, used in power plants, declined 4 percent to 11.16 million tons.
Coal For Export
Production of thermal coal used by South African power utility Eskom Holdings Ltd. declined 3.5 percent to 8.36 million ton. Eskom uses lower-grade coal than the fuel Anglo usually exports from its mines in South Africa.
BHP, the world’s biggest mining company, on April 23 said first-quarter coal and aluminum output fell.
Anglo Platinum is about 75 percent owned by Anglo American.
Anglo American’s 20 percent gain in London over the last 12 months lags behind the 63 percent gain in BHP and the 98 percent advance of Rio. BHP has bid to take over Rio.
Anglo today said it sold its 0.78 percent stake in China Shenhua Energy Co., the Asian nation’s biggest coal producer, for $708 million.
