Six coalmines have been closed in Donetsk region (East Ukraine) due to violations of gas and coal dust regulations, fire safety, and the absence of individual safety equipment, the press service of the State Committee for Industrial Safety, Labor Protection and Mining Supervision has said.

In particular, coalmining work has been stopped at the Dzerzhynskvuhillia, Ordzhonikidzevuhillia, Artemvuhillia, Torezvuhillia, Vuhillia-Invest and Gorky coalmines. As reported, on January 4, 2009, a regime of special control was launched at Ukrainian coalmines following a methane explosion at the Dzerzhynskvuhillia coalmine. The blast then injured eight people. In December 2008, the State Committee for Industrial Safety, Labor Protection and Mining Supervision said it is not planning to approve annual programs on the development of coalmining work for those companies owning coalmines involved in illegal coal extraction. The committee demanded earlier that the top management of coalmines of all forms of ownership hinder the unsanctioned penetration of people in the liquidated coalmine tunnels.
