Coal Mining Companies Safety Award, 5 International Coal Group Mining Operations Receive Safety Awards

International Coal Group, Inc. today announced that five International Coal Group mining operations received awards for their outstanding safety records by the West Virginia State Council of the Joseph A. Holmes Association.
The awards, which were presented on May 2 at the council’s annual meeting at the Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, WV, recognized mining operations in Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Districts 3 and 4 that had the lowest rate of injury as measured by non-fatal days lost (NFDL).
Joseph A. Holmes Award recipients included:
- Wolf Run Mining Imperial Deep Mine, Upshur County, WV
- Wolf Run Mining Sawmill Run Preparation Plant, Upshur County, WV
- ICG Eastern Birch River Surface Mine, Webster County, WV
- ICG Eastern Birch River Preparation Plant, Webster County, WV
- ICG Beckley Pocahontas Preparation Plant, Raleigh County, WV
Wolf Run Mining’s Sawmill Run Preparation Plant was a double award recipient, also receiving MSHA’s prestigious Pacesetter Award for Mine Safety in recognition for having the lowest NFDL rate in MSHA District 3 for 2008.
In addition to the awards presented to ICG operations in West Virginia, MSHA on April 2 honored nine members of the ICG Knott County Calvary Mine in Kentucky with Joseph A. Holmes Awards for Life Saving. The group was recognized for their actions in treating injuries sustained by a fellow mine worker in March, 2008.
