Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller spoke against raising the mining tax and suggested introducing an import duty for natural gas.

At a meeting with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Saturday, Miller mentioned possible changes in the mining tax and customs duties proposed by some of the government members.

“How do you assess these proposals? I mean in terms of the budget revenues so that we could fulfil all obligations, primarily social ones,” Putin asked Miller.

“I think the proposals to raise the mining tax are not justified at the moment,” Miller said at a meeting with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Saturday.

“I think that given the growth of supplies to the European market and the internal market, we can achieve the same result in terms of the figures that have been projected by the Finance Ministry. I am confident that that’s how it will be,” he said.

“In addition, I think would be advisable to consider the possibility of introducing an import duty for the purchase of gas by Gazprom abroad. This can become an additional source of revenue to the federal budget,” Miller said.
