South African Mining Production Declined 7.3 Percent In June, Gold Production Down 12 Percent

Statistics South Africa reported the total mining production for the second quarter of the year increased by 4.5%, compared with the first quarter of the year. However, in June, the total mining production decreased 7.3%, with the gold mine production down 12.2% and production nongold down 6.4%.

Platinum-group metals (PGMs) production is a major contributor to the increase, he added, stressing that nongold production is 5.8% higher in the quarter-quarter, while gold production down 4.2% in the quarter-quarter.
However, production in the second quarter this year down 10.7%, compared with production figures for the second quarter of 2008.
Meanwhile, Stats SA reported that the total seasonally adjusted value of mineral sales .9-R17 billion for the three months ended in May, down 0.8%, compared with the previous three months, because the 2.5%, or R1, 2 — billion, a decrease in sales nongold minerals.
Estimated the actual value of mineral sales for the three months was down 24.1%, compared with three months that ended in May 2008.
PGMs sales to contribute 15% of the decline, manganese ore sales to 4.4%, 3.8% for coal and other nonmetallic minerals to a decrease of 1.7%.
