Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has approved Rs 980 million for the first coal-based power plant project in the province. This pilot project will be made functional within a period of one year to produce 50 MW electricity through coal gas mines in salt range area.

While talking about the project, Secretary Mines and Mineral Development, Saif Ullah Chatha said that on the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, the department made efforts and now this project in its launching phase. He said the project is not only environment-friendly but also provide cheap electricity at Rs 3.50 per unit only.

Punjab Coal Mining Company, established by the Punjab government, will process the project while renowned atomic scientist Dr Samar Mubarak Mand will head the technical team which will supervise the implementation of the project. He further informed that after the success of this project, Punjab government will launch ten more such projects which will result in provision of 500 MW cheap electricity. He said that after making this project functional, the company will return the money to the Punjab government from its profit so that work on more projects could be started.

Secretary Mines & Mineral Development, Saif Ullah Chatha informed that this first of its kind project of burning the coal underground and obtain diesel from gases will be reflective of vision of Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif which would be completed in the shortest possible time. He informed that there are vast chances of obtaining electricity through coal in a 70 km long and 20 km wide salt range area wherein work is in progress by the Mines and Mineral Development Department as per government instruction so that the dream of Punjab Chief Minister to generate power through our own resources could be materialised.
