October 20th, 2009
South Africa plans new coal mines opening in the Waterberg coal basin. New coal mines will replace the coal mines that have been depleted in the Highveld, Witbank and Ermello coalfields in Mpumalanga. The opening ceremony of this coal mines in order to anticipate increased demand for coal is expected to rise in 2010 until 2030. Increased global coal demand due to the increased use of energy.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, A Strategic Analysis of South African Coal Mining Industry, South Africa found that coal production will struggle to meet demand during the next few years. However, although environmental and logistical obstacles that South Africa faced the coal mining industry, coal production tends to trend in 2011 when the new mines will be opened in the Waterberg coalfield.
Mr. Wonder Nyanjowa research analyst at Frost & Sullivan said that “South African coal mining industry remains unbalanced, with the increasing demand for coal on the one hand and sources of supply constrained on the other side. With global demand for coal increased by an annual average 4%, the country is the supply capacity may not be able to cope with increased demand. ”
Eskom electricity generation capacity expansion, capacity expansion along with Sasol, is set to boost South African coal consumption by 75 million tons per year. However, coal supply will remain stagnant.
He said that “South African coal mining industry needs to put himself well in order to meet rising demand for coal in domestic and international markets. Waterberg coal in the basin which currently has one operating coal mine represents the future of electricity generation and coal mining in Africa South. ”
