South African mining accidents killed 199 workers last year


Mining accidents in South Africa, the world`s largest producer of platinum and gold, killed 199 workers in 2006, three fewer than a year earlier.
Most of the deaths occured in mines with deep shafts.
Gold mines recorded 113 deaths and 40 fatalities occurred in platinum mines, the Chamber of Mines said in an emailed statement on Thursday.
